Efficient Business Through Using Barcode Scanners

by Dane Masters

Barcode scanners have now become a routine essential in various stores. If you visit any commercial outlet like a grocery store, retail malls, or even hospitals, you will notice that tabbing up the purchases and other things like stock maintenance are all done using barcode scanners. They improve the ease of function and so help to increase efficiency in any business.

Barcode scanners are, of course, designed to read barcodes. Barcodes are made up of a combination of bars and spaces. Barcodes do not contain a great deal of encoded information about any given item; they supply a reference number. When that number is scanned into the computer, information about the product is pulled up.

A typical barcode scanner can be split in to four main functional units: a source of light, lens, a photoconductor, and a decoder. The bars and the spaces on a barcode absorb and reflect light respectively. Reflected light is transformed by the photoconductor into an electrical signal. Finally, the decoder interprets this signal in to a form that can be processed by the computer.

There are two types of barcode scanners: CCD scanners and Laser scanners. Both have different unique features and their own merits and demerits. A typical CCD scanner has no movable parts and so the issue of maintenance and wear and tear is not involved most of the time, unlike the laser scanners. The laser scanners have the ability to read data over a greater distance, compared to CCD scanners and hence they are perfect in places like warehouses, where one has to move all around the place tagging products.

Barcode scanners cost anywhere from just over a hundred dollars to several thousand dollars, depending on their individual features. Several different online sites offer price comparisons and reviews of different barcode scanners. Even if you’re “just” a small business owner, it’s worth considering incorporating barcode technology into your business. You’ll be pleased with the increased efficiency and easier management of data.
