Have you ever wondered why people give each other promise rings? Actually, there are four big reasons promise rings are so popular in mainstream culture.

So what sort of reasons are promise rings given for? For starters, a pre-engagement ring. When a man usually gives this symbolism of affection to a woman, they believe she is the one. However, they both may not be ready for an engagement. This is usually done when both man and woman are of young age.

The second reason is to keep a vow of chastity. Parents are the typical givers of these kinds of promise rings. Why? It’s their way of showing that they understand the pressure their child is under to have sex without marriage. It’s a way for the child to let parents know they’ll stay sex free until marriage. On the flip side of this promise ring, parents will also give their child the ring as a promise to be drug, alcohol and tobacco free.

The third reason is to keep a vow of monogamy between two consenting adults. If they so choose not to get married or choose to shy away from a pre-engagement setting, then this promise ring can show them and others that they are committed to one another without the forced intrusion of “complete” commitment.

The fourth reason is a promise to keep a friendship. Friends can give each other a promise ring so they will remember one another as they get older and possibly move away from one another.

Depending on what the promise ring signifies, this will depend on which hand and finger the ring will be worn on. For instance, when a man wants to give his counterpart a token of his affection such as a pre-engagement ring, the ring should be worn on the left hand ring finger. This holds true for a monogamy promise ring. Should the ring be for substance abstinence then any finger will do. Yet, the left ring finger is usually chose. A friendship ring can be worn on any finger. Thumbs are fine too.

Can a man wear a promise ring? Though not traditionally done, men can and do wear promise rings. All a man should get is a simple band for his promise ring. And the couple can also wear matching promise rings.

When you are giving a promise ring to someone, it’s very important to state why this ring is being given. You don’t want the other person’s feelings hurt if they mistake the promise ring for something much more than it actually is and ruin what you have.
