Things to consider in a pet containment system

by Cheryl L. True

Are electric dog fences expensive? Many people who ask this question are surprised to discover that this type of fence is no more expensive than traditional fences. In fact, in the long run, electric pet containment systems can actually save you money, both in vet bills and in labor.

Also, unlike wire fences which can be cut or privacy fences that can have holes kicked in them or become the backdrop for local graffiti art, an electric dog fence requires very little maintenance.

The main concern that pet owners need to worry about with this confinement system is whether or not the batteries are running low in their pets’ collars. But the guess work has been eliminated since quality systems now provide collars that feature a low battery indicator light, making it even easier to keep your electric dog fence in tip top shape.

So when you go out to find a good pet containment system, what do you look for? Should you always buy the most expensive system in the market? Are bargain bin items really a bargain? If you’re looking into purchasing an electric dog fence, follow these easy steps:

Research – never be afraid to take some time and read about companies who are producing the products as well as what people have to say about it. Do they have a Web site? Are there any publications about the company? What do the customers say about the product? As a consumer, you have the right to look around and find the best product you can find.

Discuss your options – Don’t be afraid to talk to friends and family members who have used electric fences for their pets. If they don’t have any experience using them, inquire from your veterinarian or talk to local area dog breeders.

The Internet is a helpful place where you can you read about products and probably find a bunch of people who are more than happy to give their reviews of products.

Product over price – it’s all right to shop for a deal but your decision in purchasing an electric pet fence should not be based solely on the price tag. Be sure that your fence is large enough to cover your property.

Ensure that it will do all that you expect a pet containment system to do and make sure that it comes with a warranty that the company will stand by and honor if anything goes wrong with your system.

Can it work with your friend’s system if your dog has a play date with other pets that use other systems? Does your electric dog fencing come with a full lifetime guarantee? All of these things should be considered before the price tag.

Don’t be afraid to take your time, look over products carefully and compare. While you may end up paying a little extra for an electric pet containment system initially, the difference you save in trips to the veterinarian and the safety and well-being of your furry friend will make it all worthwhile.

Are you losing your pets to accidents? Do they wander and never return? Show them that you care. Keep your pets safe from harm with the wireless electronic fence.
